01 // Proof of Concept: Validation of Big Bubble Curtain Systems Down to -88.4 Meters.

When subsea noise mitigation moves beyond standard depth parameters, hydrodynamic pressure and deployment mechanics increase exponentially. During an intensive offshore UXO clearance campaign in Europe, Weyres Offshore was tasked with proving the technical viability, structural integrity, and acoustic effectiveness of Big Bubble Curtain (BBC) systems under extreme water depth conditions.
Executing across 87 active clearance sites—with depths reaching down to -88.4 meters—Weyres Offshore delivered turnkey operational management, full hardware execution, and continuous 24/7 system deployment.

02 // Depth Profile & High-Pressure OperationsTo encompass the detonation sources, the Big Bubble Curtain was deployed at a precise radius of approximately 65 meters. Operating in deep water required driving extreme pneumatic volumes through subsea hose spreads against massive hydrostatic pressure.

Depth Distribution Metrics

  • 60 m – 70 m Depth: 28 Active Locations

  • 70 m – 80 m Depth: 39 Active Locations

  • > 80 m Depth: 16 Active Locations (Peak depth: 88.4 m)

High-Volume Pneumatic Setup

  • Operating Pressure:Driven at continuous pressure levels up to 12.5 bar.

  • Air Output: Delivering total airflow rates of up to 500 m³/min.

  • Compressor Infrastructure: Powered by Weyres Offshore’s proprietary fleet of heavy-duty KAESER offshore compressors.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Fully compliant with German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) standards, setting the global benchmark for subsea noise attenuation.

03 // Turnkey Scope of Execution

Weyres Offshore provided end-to-end engineering, logistics, and on-site operation, maintaining extreme ownership over the entire BBC spread throughout the campaign:

  • Pre-Execution Engineering & Management: Comprehensive preparation, including Method Statements, Risk Assessment & Management Systems (RAMS), crew allocation, logistics staging, and strict regulatory alignment prior to vessel mobilization.

  • System Overhaul & Staging: Full technical overhaul, pressure testing, and pre-deployment calibration of the specialized subsea hose units.

  • Winch & Deck Operations: Specialized winch handling for controlled deployment, precision subsea positioning, and rapid recovery under high-current offshore conditions.

  • 24/7 Offshore Deployment Crew: Staging experienced offshore mechanical technicians aboard execution vessels to manage heavy equipment, continuous maintenance, deck operations, and daily compliance reporting.

  • Active Offshore Management: Direct client interface, resource management, and daily reporting to guarantee zero operational downtime.

"At nearly 90 meters depth, the physical forces on both our equipment and crew are immense. Proving that our Big Bubble Curtain systems can reliably perform under these extreme pressures is the ultimate validation of our engineering and operational grit. We don’t just meet standards. We push the boundaries of what’s possible offshore.."
