Weyres Offshore

Big Bubble Curtain Technology.

Big Bubble Curtain Operations.

Dear Partner,

Welcome to Weyres Offshore — a global leader in innovative noise mitigation solutions for the offshore wind industry. Our patented bubble curtain technology creates a protective barrier of bubbles that significantly reduces underwater noise during offshore construction, helping to safeguard marine life and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

The system works by releasing compressed air through hoses laid on the seabed. As the air rises, it forms a continuous curtain of bubbles — acting as both a physical and acoustic shield. Every solution is customizable and delivered in close collaboration with our clients.

We offer a fully integrated service package, including:

  • Project management and engineering.

  • Project operations with all necessary equipment and consumables.

  • Qualified personnel for operation and maintenance.

  • Mobilization and demobilization of equipment.

Our process includes four key phases:

  • Preparation – Planning, risk assessments, and equipment testing.

  • Mobilization – Transport and installation of systems.

  • Operations – Deployment and management of the bubble curtain during construction phase.

  • Demobilization – Safe return of equipment and personnel.

We also offer optional DP2-class vessel services for offshore operations.

Our technology is primarily employed for reducing noise during offshore activities such as pile driving and the detonation of underwater munitions. It offers protection to marine life, including harbor porpoises and seals, which rely on ultrasound for navigation in aquatic environments, through the attenuation of hydro sound by compressed air.

Technical Highlights:

  • BBC Hosing System: 6 Winches* equipped with with approximately 1,040m of steel-reinforced Alfagomma hoses rated for 40 bar pressure and fitted with negative buoyancy chains. Designed to fit 20ft container dimensions.

  • Compressor Spread and Process System:  Kaeser M350 (30 m³), Kaeser M250 (25 m³) and DENAIR DAC100 (100 m³) Compressors feature oil-free operation, specialized motors, and robust operational capabilities in varied angles and conditions. We can also provide and operate compressors from brands like Aggreko to meet project requirements.

* These hosing systems (winches) are designed, developed, and manufactured by Weyres Offshore.6 winches strategically stored in Daleiden and Cuxhaven.

Our bubble curtain systems can be deployed in various configurations:

  • Single or double rings

  • Full or semicircle layouts

  • Adaptable for coastal and deep-sea environments

We've successfully supported major offshore projects worldwide, including:

  • Borssele Substation

  • Deutsche Bucht

  • South Fork and Revolution Windfarms

  • UXO clearance operations in the North Sea and UK

FAQ

1. What is Weyres Offshore’s bubble curtain technology?

Our patented bubble curtain technology effectively reduces underwater noise during offshore construction. Compressed air is released through hoses laid on the seabed, creating a continuous curtain of bubbles that acts as both a physical and acoustic barrier. This protects marine mammals such as harbor porpoises and seals and supports compliance with environmental regulations.

4. How long does it take to deploy and recover the bubble curtain?

Under normal circumstances, the following timeframes apply:

  • Deployment of a BBC: approximately 3.5 to 5 hours

  • Recovery of a BBC: approximately 3.0 to 3.5 hours

7.Does Weyres Offshore provide a vessel for operations?

Our equipment can either be installed on a client-provided vessel or we can supply a DP2-capable vessel in collaboration with our partner SSY Global.

10. How many personnel are needed for operations?

Each shift requires three qualified technicians to operate the bubble curtain system.

2. What services does Weyres Offshore provide?

We offer a fully integrated service package, including:

  • Project management and engineering

  • Operations with all necessary equipment and consumables

  • Qualified personnel for operation and maintenance

  • Mobilization and demobilization of systems

  • Optional: Provision of a DP2-class vessel

5. What level of noise reduction can be expected?

Our setup achieves a sound attenuation of 14 to 18 decibels (dB) — a significant contribution to protecting marine ecosystems during high-noise offshore activities such as pile driving or UXO detonation.

8. How much deck space is required on a vessel?

The required space depends on the bubble curtain configuration:

  • Single Bubble Curtain (BBC): 400–600 m²

  • Double Bubble Curtain (DBBC): 600–800 m²
The exact layout of the equipment is specified in close coordination with the client.

11. How much advance notice is needed for personnel and equipment availability?

We require a minimum lead time of 3 weeks (UXO Projects) to ensure the availability of tools and qualified personnel.

3. In what configurations can the system be deployed?

Our systems are highly adaptable and can be deployed as:

  • Single or double rings

  • Full or semicircle layouts

  • Suitable for both nearshore and deep-sea environments

6. Does Weyres Offshore provide a vessel for operations?

Our equipment can either be installed on a client-provided vessel or we can supply a DP2-capable vessel in collaboration with our partner SSY Global.

9. Does Weyres Offshore only use its own compressors?

In addition to our own oil-free compressors (e.g., Kaeser M350, M250, DENAIR DAC100), we can also operate compressors from other providers such as Aggreko, depending on project requirements.

12. How long does it take to mobilize the equipment?

We require 2 days in port to install the equipment on the vessel.
